Types of Bikes

You may not know what type of bike you need for the kind of riding you are doing or would like to do. There are a number of different bike types. There are a few very common types of bikes and then there are many very unique types. Some of the more unique styles are either custom built, or ordered from a specialized dealer. Below we will go over some of the more common types of bikes.

Racing Bike Racing bikes are designed for speed with light frames and very narrow, high pressure tires. Racing bikes include several sub categories. A few of them are: road bike, tri bike, time trial bike, and track bike. Most racing bikes have dropped handle bars for a more aerodynamic riding position. Racing bikes are typically lightweight with minimal accessories.

Touring Bike Touring bikes are similar to a road bike. Unlike most other bikes, though, touring bikes have eyelets for attaching racks. The racks purpose are to attach and carry gear for extremely long rides, usually cross country. They also have the gearing and stable handling required to transport heavy loads. These bikes are also a good choice for those who don't need the carrying capacity, but who do need low gears for hilly terrain.

Mountain Bike Mountain bikes are designed for off-road cycling, and include other sub-types of off-road bicycles such as Cross Country, Downhill , and Freeride bicycles. All mountain bicycles feature sturdy, highly durable frames and wheels, wide-gauge treaded tires, and cross-wise handlebars to help the rider resist sudden jolts. Mountain bikes feature various types of suspension systems (e.g. coiled spring, air or gas shock), and hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes. Mountain bicycle gearing is very wide-ranging, from very low ratios to high ratios, typically with 16 to 30 gears.

Fixed Gear Bike Fixed Gear bikes do not have the ability to coast. The sprocket is screwed directly on to the hub and there is no freewheel mechanism. A reverse-thread lockring is usually fitted to prevent the sprocket from unscrewing. Whenever the rear wheel is turning, the pedals turn in the same direction. By resisting the rotation of the pedals, a rider can slow the bike to a stop, without the aid of a brake. A fixed gear bicycle can even be ridden in reverse. It takes a lot of practice to master a fixed gear bike.

Hybrid Bike Hybrid bikes are a combination of features from both mountain and road bikes. The wheels and tires are not as study as those on a mountain bike. And they are not as sleek and fast as those on a road bike. The frame on a Hybrid bike is very similar to that of a mountain bike. The handle bars are cross-wise as well. They usually have a high number of gears.

BMX Bike BMX bikes are designed for stunts and tricks. They are very advanced and may even be made of titanium to make the parts lightweight and strong. BMX is popular worldwide, and there are plenty of paid professionals and stores to go with it.

Recumbent Bike Recumbent bikes are designed to maximize comfort and minimize wind resistance. This can help those who have back, neck, or hand problems that would be aggravated by a traditional cycling position. It's easy to reach high downhill speeds and difficult to climb hills on a recumbent because of the rider's sitting position.
